lining paper

Hi,

I am very rapidly trying to redecorate a bedroom in our 1860's colony house in Edinburgh. It has a mixture of lathe and plaster walls, plaster board and modern plaster skim. It also has pitched roof on one side. I was going to line it all with lining paper before painting, but I got a quote from a decorator who said it was better just to prep the walls thoroughly and paint directly onto them. They also wanted £400 to do it. With wife about to have baby I am inclined to save the cash and do it myself - but to line or not? ANy comments appreciated!

If the room has a pitched roof and (presumably) at least one outside wall, how much does it suffer from chilliness, condensation and/or damp? Any form of dampness in the wall(s) is likely to cause a deterioration in the wallpaper and its adhesive.

On the other hand - if the walls are dry but cold, lining paper does give a little benefit and the walls wont feel as cold. might reduce condensation ?

Well - there is a bay window in the middle of the pitched roof and that is where condensation sometimes collects - I haven't noticed any on the walls. I have now put a thin layer of insulation on the pitched side as it was v cold, and put plasterboard over the top. I'm also going to put an insulating layer over the floor and then laminate - as the wind whips under the roof and up through the floor boards - instant fridge!
