I have a victorian house (circa 1865), and am currently in the process of rennovating one of the rooms. Looking at the following webiste;
http://www.bricksandbrass.co.uk/deselem/fireplace/fireplace.htm
The fireplace in the room is similar in style to the early register grate, although the back of the insert opening is fire brick not part of the casting, and it has no damper control. There is no fret or grate, and when I was in the process of looking for a replacment I decided to test the chimney with a smoke pellet.
I found there to be a very good up-draught, but it looks like there is a leak between the adjacent flue, as the smoke was exiting 2 chimney pots.
I have lined a flue before with great success, but it didnt have a fireplace in at the time, it was for a stove installation. Im unsure as to how the liner would be terminated at the bottom, given the small throat due to the firebricks at the back of the insert. Does the fireplace need to come out to fit a register plate, or is there another way to do it. I have been trying to get a chimney guy round to advise, but there is nobody in my area.
Not sure I've made any sense, but any advice would be appreciated. Also anyone know of a good place online for fire grates/frets. The insert is 14" at the front.
If you need any more info, or pictures let me know.
Thanks,
