What is the construction of the wall? What was under the lime wash? How was the wall prepared (if at all)?
In my limited experience, lime wash does not cover particularly well and needs multiple coats, so perhaps the staining will disappear with a couple more coats?

I limewashed new render a couple of years ago and a bright lime green drew through the coats. The job took at least 5 coats and leaving a few days before the last coat seemed to do the trick. The wall has remained white since.

could it be smoke?.
We have plenty of yellow patches on walls , mostly around fireplaces, where smoke has stained the stone/filler underneath.
If it is smoke then lots of layers wont make a difference.
If its damp then obviously need to trace the probem first as it will just keep coming through
Again we have damp patches here and there, particularly around the tops of chimneys, where water makes its way into the chimney wall, down and then out.
It comes and goes with the weather.
Hopefully it is just some staining that lots more layers will cover...they will also give the wall a wonderfull smooth surface.

It is a wall next to chimney so it may have been smoke. We had the chimney lined last year so hopefully that will stop anymore smoke coming through. We are going to try a couple of coats of lime and see what happens. May have to resort to stain cover if it keeps coming through but luckily it is not a huge stain.

The previous owner had removed a chimney breast in one of our rooms, I brushed off as much soot and staining as I could, but first few coats were still yellow due to the soot stains. 5 coats did the trick for me, last two were reasonably thick (probably about half the consistency of clay paint). Stayed white after that and no cracking from the thicker limewash

I was watching a video the other day - I beleeive there is a stain blocker you can paint under it in places there are stains - I suspect it affects breathability so you neeed to addess the underlying issuesisits leaking tar/damp. If its old tar/smake buildup it might work!?

Sorry couldn't tell you as I freestyle it by consistency rather than measuring.
As a guide, if normal limewash is the consistency of semi-skimmed milk, then the thicker consistency I used was a lot thicker, like clay paint or double cream. Thick enough that it doesn't really drip off the brush much...
