We have given the walls five coats of limewash and One wall an interior wall has covered well but the two exterior walls seem to be patchy and it is the repointing that we have done in between the stones that is not looking the same. We did repoint last September so it has been left a while before we started the limewash process. Any ideas why this is happening ? Thanks

Limewash can be tricky stuff. No wonder it went out of fashion. My guess is that the porosity of the new pointing is different to the rest so it is not surprising that the first coat or two look different. After five coats you should have got over that problem but from my use of limewash I get the feeling* that if a coat is not entirely set then it affects the coat on top. So my suggestion is to wait a month or two before you give it a final coat

What was used for the repointing and when was it done? Could it have dried out the limewash more quickly than the stonework, resulting in a difference in 'setting' of the limewash? Or could it contain more moisture than the stonework, which might affect the transparency of the limewash? Just conjecture really.
It could be any of the above I suppose. I think maybe it may be best to leave it for a while a see what happens. I may rethink any future attempts at limewash and go for a different finish but the reason we chose it is that seemed econimical as our costs are rising rapidly
