We ripped off the cement render on our Georgian house 13 years ago and re-rendered in lime. The house is so much happier - it was one of the best things that we did. We used limewash which worked really well. It took the fresh lime really well and I was sure to dampen everything down and had hessian up to keep everything damp. The house looked really beautiful (changing in colour slightly when wet) and we have had no issues with damp (note that we re-opened all the chimneys and lifted the solid floors to have suspended floors everywhere.
8 years later I re-applied limewash. This was at the start of COVID and everything was a bit of a mess. Because the first coat took so well I probably was a bit slap dash when applying the limewash the second time around. I probably slapped it on too thick and I didn't use any hessian. The result was that pretty soon after the limewash started to flake off. It was a bit of a mess.
I plan to give it another go this year. The question is whether I use limewash once more or whether I try SecilTek Silicate paint (https://mikewye.co.uk/product/seciltek-silicate-paint-sp-01). One additional factor is that the scaffolding will probably cost ~£1800 so I don't really want to need to do this every 5 years! One final factor is that the paint will cost ~£1000 whereas the limewash (including buying some hessian this time) will cost ~£400 with the hessian being reusable for future years (I hope).
Any thoughts out there - especially from people who have tried both limewash and Silicate paint. I really like the look of limewash - when it stays on - I don't like it so much when it flakes off! But I also like the idea of paint being more durable so I don't need to do it every few years. But then again, if I use Silicate paint this probably means that I can never go back to using limewash in future.... So much to consider!
