limewash on sandstone walls

I have read that limewash should not be used on first time sandstone walls. I dont understand what this means as I was thinking of using limewash as a cheaper alternative than clay paint to paint the walls.Can anyone advise please.

Never heard of that. No idea why that would be. What does your source recommend instead?
Perhaps this means that the wall should be plastered first, and not just limewashed onto bare stone?

Wet the wall first. Then limewash. No problem with it going onto stone.
