Limestone Fire Surround

Wondered if anyone had any ideas. We have a 1890's terrace and have uncovered the original limestone fire surround in what would originally have been the kitchen. It is damaged in places and doesnt look particulary nice at the moment. We wondered about repairing and painting it but not sure if that would look right.

It would in all probability have been painted anyhow - black, brown, dark green - take your pick!

How large an opening is it?

I qualify that by saying if yours has no sign of paint then it maybe was never painted - but they frequently were.

Stone repairs can be made, and a period style shelf and rack put above. I presume the range is no longer there.

no, no range or paint. we were hoping to put in a stove or just leave it bare for now. we have tried samples of black and cream paints but neither look right. do you know what colours might have been used?

Sorry, got that wrong, it has some brown paint on it - doesnt look good though! The opening is about 4x4 foot.
