lime silicate paint on modern extension, possible?

About 70 percent of my cottage is a new extension. It's all painted in a modern exterior paint. I'm removing the paint from the old house. Turn of the century solid brick walls. As the paint is non breathable.

Is there a breathable paint that will stick to the modern extension party of the house too. I dont want to have to strip that too.

Also will lime paint adhere to a brick that has lost its face due to damp problems. Etc

Out of interest how are you removing on the old non breathable paint?

I don't think you'll get a breathable paint to stick to a non-breathable paint but I might be wrong. How different would they look though? Lime paint (do you mean limewash?) will stick to a brick that has lost its face though.

To remove the paint i was going to use a combination of chemical and needle scaler.

Any one heard anything about this breathable paint silan paint from mapei. Supposed to adhere to modern paint also.

Any advice on silicate or lime.

Pozilime is a limewash which is reputed to stick to modern paints - consult Anglia Lime for more detailed advice though.

Some modern paints claim to be breathable. Dulux weather shield says breathable on the tin. How breathable it actually is I don't know?

Pozilime sounds like a good plan. Ill speak to the company on Monday. Even has farrow ball colour available.

If it's to be silicate, the choices are probably Keim or Beeck.

The search function in here will find some references to both: I looked into both for my house and the local church. The church ended up not being painted at all (for now), and I did the plinth of our house with Beeck. It's a complex process, with detailed instructions that must be followed exactly. Very Germanic!

Those delightful Fachwerkhäuser you see in Germany were probably painted with Keim or Beeck. The finish is VERY much harder and more durable than limewash, but don't get it on the windows. If the house is listed, speak to the CO first.

On my house I have a mixture of limewash, mineral paint and modern emulsion.

I used limewash on the all the old lime stucco after a ridiculously laborious process of stripping the old paint off. My 16 flue chimney stack - shared with a neighbour - had to be rebuilt. This was rendered in lime and painted with a breathable mineral paint in a colour to match the limewash. I did this to reduce the cost of future maintenance as the stack, being four storeys up, would require substantial scaffolding for each repainting.

My rear extension is in a modern style to contrast with the original house and has a cement-based render. Rather than trying to blend it in I decided to use a modern emulsion paint in a slightly different shade to the house.

I am pretty happy with the result.

I've slopped home-made limewash over everything here and had no problems with it sticking to the range of coatings on new and old parts of the building (even adheres pretty well to the car if your not careful!)
