I should have added that the Anglia Lime advert was offering a free bag of Thermalime to give it a try. A 10kg bag is normally £10.50 and makes 15l. Doesn't say how big the free sample is.

It all makes perfect sense as an infill between new and old timber frames. I had thought about rendering the gaps but I want the new 17C frame infill to look different from the gap infill. So I had a bit of fun with the gap. The Roman tiles are not historically accurate but the wall is (ish).

Another timing question. My final bit of top coat render was completed on 1st November. The limewash is just about finished apart from the couple of panels which were rendered on the last day which are leeching colour through into the limewash (a lime green). I'm planning to leave the panels to dry until Sunday or Monday and see if another couple of coats will solve the trouble.
The scaffolding will be removed on Thursday next week (yippee) but I have a hessian cover in place which can be removed later from ground level. When would be a good time to remove the cover? Would a month or so from the last coat of render be enough to allow the render to form some frost resistance? It is tempting to remove the cover with the scaffolding though I could have a grand unveiling party later on.
I'm pleased with the white colour. It looks odd when looking only at the north gable but makes the new frame look like a natural extension of the facade when viewed from the road.

I reckon that the warm autumnal weather we've been having (in these here parts at least) must have extended the 'lime season' considerably this year. I don't think we've had night time temperatures much below 10C yet and I generally think of 5C as being the time to stop working with lime.
I'd guess that render may be more sensitive than limewash due the the increased time for a thick layer to carbonate. I can't imagine that limewash would take very long at all, especially in the current damp but warm conditions.
Having said all that, there can be no harm in leaving the hessian in place for as long as possible. Some protection is surely better than none, even if it doesn't really need it.

Agreed. I would leave the hessian up all winter if you can bear it. Lime render carbonation is now very slow and though the surface may seem ok the deeper layers will not carbonate properly until spring. Otoh, my rule of thumb for limewashing over well set mortar is ... if no frost is forecast for three days then live dangerously and risk it

That sounds sensible. I'll aim to leave the hessian there until spring and then surprise everyone with the new timber frame that will magically appear from behind.

That was a handy reminder noj. Just emailed Anglia Lime and mine arrives on Tuesday. I have an area of internal wall 4ft wide x 3ft high which (apparently) is rendered in Lime Lite and it's permanently cold and attracts considerable condensation. Looks and feels more like bog standard cement to me. I can see it's been a troublesome area before because when I stripped the paint, there was a clear join line in the gypsum plaster skim around the precise area. Outside of that area is dry. It was ruined by 'specialists' before we moved in. Hopefully drying out and a layer of Thermalime will fix it. 10 litres dry / 15 litres made up might be just right at a thickness of about 1/2".
Just to dredge up an old subject, how was the Thermalime?
Got a few cold rooms to re-plaster now I've finished hacking the 2" of gypsum off, and looking at these insulating lime plasters to try and turn two jobs into one. Does it need a finishing coat after, or can you just apply the Thermalime, then limewash/clay paint straight on top?
