lime pointing up to portland cement

Back again. Well pulled out 2 purlins which looked like they had been dug out of the sea. These 2 are on the modern 40 year old extension to our old house. Must have been rubbish timber as the two rafters are gone too.

My question is can I use Lime to rebed the loose blocks around the purlins. The rest is done with normal sand and cement or will thye lime react up against the cement or should I go with normal sand/cement? Just thinking that the lime may help them breath if moisture gets in as it,s this side of the house that gets a hammering from the weather.

Lime is probably best. When you use cement around wood the edge of the wood against the cement tends to become wet. There aren't any compatability issues with using lime in a cement wall.

This is going to should like a really, I mean REALLY' dumb question but - is it safe to assume that replacement rafters and purlins were installed?

Not yet, hopefully if the weather is fine that will be tomorrows job. Purlins are cut ready to go.

One gable almost done. 2 to go. Started on the second today replacing one of the purlins.
