Hi all
Great forum and I look forward to going through old posts and tapping into the wealth of info. In the meantime, I wondered if anyone could help please?
We've got some external walls that were covered in concrete render. This has now been hacked off and we're thinking to have it repointed using hot lime. There are sections of modern block and brick work around windows, which will be rendered in NHL2. My questions are...
1. Hot lime in mid-September. Seems from what I've read to be on the cusp of the season end, so any further views as to whether mid-September is ok?
2. Is covering the work in hessian for a week long enough or would longer be better?
3. The existing pointing seems to me to be more earth based, with small amounts of lime. I've removed all the loose and anything that succumbed to light prodding, which has left quite deep gaps on the whole. The difficulty is knowing when to stop, as in most places I think it would just keep coming away if I kept at it. But then the depth would be huge. Any tips on when enough is enough, and what is acceptable to point onto?
4. When having to point or render deeper areas, should it be done in layers? What are the potential problems if it is all filled in in one go? That's both for hot lime and NHL2.
5. I've pulled back the gravel to expose the stonework below ground level. Can this be pointed in hot lime as per the rest of the wall, or should something else be done when below ground level?
6. How do we go about selecting the appropriate aggregate coarseness for our situation / type of stone?
Sorry to ask so much. Any help on any of the questions would be massively appreciated.
Many thanks
