lime plastering prep?

Just wondering if anyone's got any tips for preparing walls for lime plaster? i'm thinking of just brushing down. At the moment the walls are quite dusty with some loose mortar...can i get away without repointing? thanks

I think the usual process is to remove all the loose stuff (I find a vacuum cleaner helps), dub out (fill all the low points / holes with lime) and then plaster making sure the wall is properly dampened first. Others are more expert than me though so I would wait for them to comment. As always pictures may help other give advise.

Is your wall brick or stone?

I was advised (when doing the same task recently) that although you have to dub out the larger holes before doing the scratch coat, you do not want to repoint neatly as the odd extra small hole filled by the haired mortar provides a bit more adhesion. Possibly a judgement call?

Brushing the dust is probably OK as you have to spray the wall anyway (which is VERY important). Vacuuming depends on what the other half will say about the state of the vacuum!
