Lime Plastering Costs

Have recently received what we think is a very expensive quote to lime plaster a room from scratch which is approx 18' x 16' x 7'6" high. Any views on how much is reasonable / to be expected ?

We've had wildly ranging quotes for lime plastering in the past and I guess ultimately you get what you pay for. The price seems to vary depending primarily on which part of the country you're in, how many coats are being used and the quality of the finish and to some extent the skill of the plasterer. As has been said on here on another thread there are plenty of jobbing plasterers who will say they can do lime plastering but think it's little more than adding some lime to their normal mix!

We're in Somerset and we've been quoted anything from £35 - £80 per square meter for 3 coat work with £60ish being about average. If it's straight forward plastering, no fancy work, I would think anything much more than £70-75 would be getting a bit pricey and you'd be expecting a top notch job at those sort of prices! But then you might be in an area where prices are higher!

I'm about halfway through the job in my house, and it's certainly taking longer and using more lime mortar than I expected!

Assuming you do the removal of the old plaster, you have solid, not lath, walls and excluding the ceiling, you've still got over 50 sq metres so that's a tonne of mortar for just the scratch coat; the float coat will be almost the same, and my experience is that each coat will take two days. In fact my plasterer did about 450 kg max in a day, but I didn't have totally clear walls as we were trying to keep old plaster if possible.

I'm paying my plasterer a total of £250 per day for him and his labourer, so to do the scratch and float coats would be at least 4 days plus two tonnes of mortar. We haven't started the skim yet, but I would guess that it would take over a day and use almost half a tonne, so that would total just over £2,000 if my maths is correct. Oh, and then there's mixer hire...

Price's for lime plastering can vary dependent on a number of things..I.E. background, how many coats,location.. etc.etc.

Normal rule of thumb is £60-£80 per square metre for walls and can be as much as £160 per square metre for ceilings,
however with costs spiralling on a daily bases..dont be suprised to see increases across the board.

Thanks for that hoppy, that tallies with the rather expensive quote I received this week for the ceiling - £1000. (12sqm) but I think it's more repair than plastering and they said 3 days' work.
