Lime Plastering book

I just bought a copy of Practical Building Conservation (Vol3) "Mortars Plasters and Renders" by Ashurst & Ashurst thinking it would be a great book - many people reference it.

My primary requirement was a good practical book on internal lime plastering but it turns out after receiving the book it doesn't talk about internal wall plastering. There are chapters on external renders, internal ceilings, but not internal walls. You would think for a book that costs 44p/page (£38 in total) and that bills itself as a "comprehensive and practical reference source" it would mention plastering onto internal walls.

So it's getting sent back to Amazon.

Does anyone have a book recommendation?

Try this book by Verrall, published by Donhead. I don't have it myself but understand it to be a very good publication.

Been there. Done that. Courses have a number of problems, one of which is the amount of verbal information you get, which I quickly forget. I need a reference book which covers everything to do with lime plastering. Why do all the books waste their time telling me how to slake lime? I just don't care. I want to know about NHL plastering, fat lime plastering, plastering onto cob, plastering onto stone, plastering onto brick, plastering onto laths, keying, number of coats, patching, graded sand, use of materials to provide a finish (eg sponges), lime in bathrooms, tiling onto lime and limewash pigments.

The day-long lime course I went on was about lime in general (although that didn't stop us watching an hour-long video with nothing whatsoever to do with lime) and covered only a couple of the above topics in depth.

Stafford Holmes and Michael Wingate - Lime in Building. An excellent book which does have a very practical and understandable section on how to do it. Indispensible!

Do you mean "Building with Lime" Published by ITDG? A good book for understanding lime in building but the chapter on plastering may not go into the detail you may require.

Lime in Building: a practical guide. Schofield 2002
and
The Natural Plaster Book. Guelberth & Chiras 2003

Both have been useful for various things. The first is very practical; the second goes into much more depth, and is very helpful even though its based on building in the US.

There's another book coming out next month, 'Using Natural Finishes' by Weismann and Bryce (Cob in Cornwall) that I think is a sort of British version of the 'Natural Plaster Book'.

I've never managed to get hold of the Holmes and Windgate book- I ordered it twice last year from Amazon (second-hand), but was beaten to it both times! I guess its quite popular. (Is it still out of print?)
