All the lime suppliers say to use three coats or at least two coats when plastering. First coat is haired and the second is mortar with a finish coat if desired.
Question: Is there any reason at all I can't just use a haired coat? The house is medieval and everywhere that I've found old plaster there is only one coat of haired. it seems to me that to be accurate to the house I'd only be using one coat of haired. Anything I'm missing here?
I have tried this and come back the next day to put on the first coat of limewash the brushing in of the limewash gives a really nice finish to the plaster. I know they also say to wait 3 weeks before painting but for anyone who's limewashed directly onto stone walls that have just been pointed it's so much easier when the mortar is still slightly wet this also just seems to make sense, and I doubt medieval people would be saying no we have to wait for the lime to cure instead of doing what was easier and what worked.
