LIME MORTAR FOR FLINT AND BRICK

I have just been looking through lots of info about Lime Mortar.
Most interesting!
Is hydrated lime to be mixed with water then left some time in airtight container? Then mixed with sharp sand for 3 parts sand to 1 lime?
The original mortar seems to have little stones and things in it.
I am going to repair a hole that some nice plumber has left in the flint wall.
What is the difference between natural hydrated lime and the others, and is one better that the others for pointing brickwork and flint ?

yes, maybe the other kind of sand (mental block) or often other stuff was mixed in too.

what other whats? You mean hydraulic lime? Thats something else for different jobs, it works differently.

standard bagged hydrated lime is ideal.

For Timbo, hydraulic lime has extra pipes in it. Honest.

Thanks NT, I have found an excellent Lime supplier local to me, Who makes any mix required at good prices.

As for the hydraulic lime, with the pipes being so long I could not get any in the car. Obviously I also have to carefull not to sever any arterys on the sand at the same time.

Apparently the pipes are made of macaroni, and reinforce the lime. This is why hydraulic lime is stronger.
