Lime course - Sheffield

Due to cancellations we need more bookings if we are to run this course:

An introduction to lime in buildings.

Saturday 12th May, 10.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m.

A mixed theory and practical course covering the science of lime and its use as a sustainable breathing building material. Students will have the opportunity to practice lime rendering and block-laying using lime mortar.

At the end of the course you should be able to:

Understand the processing of lime.
Understand the health and safety issues involved in the use of lime.
Mix lime mortar and lime render.
Undertake simple lime rendering.
Undertake basic blockwork using lime render.
Maximum course numbers: 8 people

Fees: £50.00 per person.

I'm meeting David on the course which is now definately running, but that doesn't mean it is full.

The course was today, and was, apparently, very informative and helpful. I met Mr Skier-Hughes who was, despite all attempts to pretend otherwise, fun, perfectly charming and rather nice.

However. Only Graham, my lovely husband David, and one other person who works where the course was held, turned up. A couple of people canceled at the last minute, and someone else just didn't show. What a shame. And what a waste!

Yes, David, Fiona and I had a great day. It was a real pity for Nick at SYEC as no doubt he made a loss on this day and I'm sure if I hadn't been travelling so far he'd probably have cancelled it. So I'm truely thankful to him and Andy for spending so much time with us. In the end we didn't finish until 5.30 - not bad for a 10-4 day.

I can wholeheartedly recommend going there for a visit to see the small centre and chat with Nick - large knowledge.

Jane was super, we had a nice chat and a brief look rond the house which is breath-taking, not just in it's views but also in it's enormous potential. I thought our house was a tricky project but David and Jane have a lifelong commitment, as probably do their two sons, of which the younger is one of the most polite young men I've met in a long time. The elder, I should imagine is equally as polite, but I didn't get to meet him :wink:

Well I have to go and plaster some walls and no doubt David is pointing as I type :lol: we did leave with much enthusiasm for our upcoming work, the course and company was that good.

Sad about the course, but possibly not widely enough advertised and maybe a little basic for many?

Graham was so gobsmacked by the mess in our house that he can't even remember David's name for more than a paragraph. Ah, well.

Thank you for the nice comments about Fred. He's a chatty boy, and likes visitors. Tom was upstairs watching Sky, and didn't come down as his foot makes things just a little inconvenient right now.

David's not repointing anything yet, but will be soon. We've been discussing engines again... it's an exciting life up here.

I kept it under my coat when visiting Jane :wink:

The coarse was ideal for me, and I suspect for David. I haven't been on any others and it catered exactly for what the three of us wanted. Though this was possibly due to the fact that all three of us all wanted to learn about rendering/plastering.

I'm kean to put into practise what I have learnt, which is always a sign of a good course as you feel you have learnt something.

Yes, it isn't an advanced course, but as a beginners it is excellent, I'd recommend it to all in my shoes, though there can't be too many two headed monsters about

Faces I can remember anywhere....... names are definately not my strong point, never have been, never will be and will always be cause for my embarresment

As for mess, it wasn't that bad....... If you want less mess buy a small house.... We haven't worked out how we once filled a small house with mess and after buying one about 4 times the size it was instantly filled with mess.

Ah - it's Ev's law - the mess accumulates to fill the space available.

Thankfully I have a large understair cupboard. It's useful for storing mess in tidyish piles when you have to pretend to visitors that you really aren't such a pig, and even more useful to hide in when people arrive unexpectedly...
