Lime ceiling

Hello Im in the progress of some renovation work on a 1880 house which needs new ceilings. The originals had been boarded over and skimmed :roll: once the plasterboard was removed I could see why. Ive removed the remaining lime plaster so ive now got only the original lathes in place which look to be split oak (its a rather large house). My question is which sort of lime is the correct type to use and where is it available from ? , also should there be some kind of hair added? I've seen both goat and horse hair on another site. The client and myself would like to keep if not replace everything as it was.

Lime: If you want to be posh get tubs of hydrated lime from a specialist merchant. Google for 'putty lime' to find suppliers. If you're common get dry bagged hydrated lime - just ask for 'lime' at your nearest builders merchant. It's cheaper but just how much worse it is is controversial.
Yes you do need to add hair. Goat hair is said to be best and is available from the same firms as supply tubs of lime putty. Horse hair will do almost as well. Sometimes just straw was used.

I have a Myford Lathe, but I cant get the goat to stick to it? Its a long haired goat and I have tied him to the chuck - am I doing it right?

Thanks for the replys, there seems to be a shortage of goat hair everywhere at the moment. Managed to find 1/2 a kilo but thats it, Ive googled goats hair and phoned all the likely suspects to no avail. Any suggestion please.

I've just had an e-mail fome Mike Wye pointing out that he's selling goat and horse hair for a mere £7.00 per kilo. The nation must be awash in the stuff.

And I notice from his website that he has curly goat and cow hair for £11.

It's the curlies for me from now on.
