I was sent this today and thought it might be of interest to some of you. Low Energy CFL's that take half an hour to warm up irritate me, and from previous posts I know that they also irritate a lot of you, many folks despair the demise of incandescent bulbs. The "warm white" LED bulbs that I've had from the website below I've been very pleased with, although they don't look at all "period" they are nice and bright and have no perceptible warm up time.

They've now brought out these - horrible pastiche or just better looking than standard LED bulbs, you decide. As to how well they function, no idea! I could live without them paying Sarah Beeny to endorse them though..........

Thanks, they look good to me. If we didn't like pastiche (in the way that contemporary architects use the term) the only acceptable period properties would be the truly ancient ones.

This is likely to remain academic for quite some time as I have an attic full of hundreds of 'proper' bulbs, but it's good to know that there are now LEDs that will look right in period fittings and, equally important, give a correct light pattern.
The unsuitability of cfls is not confined to their ugliness and their nasty light, it's the fact that the light is all concentrated in the top half of the bulb while the bottom half is dark.
These LEDs appear to address that problem.
And if one wants a 'pearl' bulb one can always spray them with paint.

As to the cost of running light bulbs, it's trivial, like the brains of the politicians who tamper with them.

I quite like the fact I've converted many of our lights to CFLs - it means I don't need to feel guilty burning extra coal on the fire in the winter to make up for the lack of thermal output the incandescent lights no longer add to our room temp.

That was the point wasn't it?

I like those too, don't need any at the moment, but it's good to know they exist. I have distinct longings for a chandelier, and important not to spoil one with ugly bulbs.

Yes it is trivial to you - but if everyone in the country ran all their lights off LEDs (inc. streetlights etc) the energy consumption by lighting in the UK would be around 20% of current (as in an overall reduction of 80%). This would reduce demand on the grid enough that Energy companies would not be splashing out on standby generators and threatening brown outs this winter. Added to that - buy a good quality LED light bulb from one of the big players (Osram, Phillips etc), and you can easily expect 12+ years out of it. Suddenly £6 for 12 years worth of light seems a pretty good deal.

There is over-capacity in production in Asia at present, and in the next 6 months or so LED bulb prices will come down to parity on the shelf with other lighting technologies.

Disclaimer - I work for a company who supplies capital equipment to some of the LED manufacturers - but it is nothing directly to do with me, and I hate my job, so there is no bias!

These look great, much better than the halogen "energy saving" candle bulbs we currently have which look like they were knocked up in a shed. Aargh but I've refurbished our big landing light with small-bayonet fittings, rather than LED Hut's E14, E27 or B22 offerings.

Oo, BLT Direct sell some 3W LED filament small-bayonet-type candle bulbs at £9.16 each, great.

Aargh but I need SIX BULBS just for this one light,how can I spend nearly sixty quid just on bulbs for one light fitting...?

I'll give it a few more months, or maybe when a few more of the halogen bulbs have expired
