The upper floor at Amos Towers (Grade 1 Listed) is of oak boards, varying in width, up to 12 " (see 12" ruler in picture). Over the centuries the beams supporting this floor have acquired a sag (now stabilised) and the time has come to lift the boards, insert packing on top of the oak joists, and re-lay the boards level. The boards are held down with those old rectangular, slightly wedge shaped nails.
I need advice on
a) lifting the boards with minimum damage
b) what best to use for packing above the joists
c) how to refix the boards, assuming the old nails would not drive happily into 350 year old oak
Has anybody done this job on such a floor? Are there any firms specialising in this sort of thing?
