Letterbox

We are having a new front door made to replace our modern B&Q job, but as it will be much more appropriate for the period of the house there won't be any letterbox. Have looked at exterior mailboxes on fleabay, but they all look a bit cheap and nasty. Have toyed with an old Royal Mail box, but don't think it would really be appropriate for the building. Has anybody any suggestions as to other options I could consider?

16th Century thatched workers cottage, so nothing too ostentatious I would have thought.

I don't know if you think they're ostentatious but the forged iron style finish might be appropriate. I think they look like chimney soot doors.

I do like those Owain, think they maybe a bit too formal looking for our place though, I think a wooden one on a post may suit though, will have a look at something along those lines

Have decided to just ask the postman to throw the mail in the garden, suitably fitting for our hovel!

Have actually just remembered the village postmen lived here back in Victorian times, so maybe an old GPO mail box on a pole might actually be quite fitting

If you realy want to put a post box on a stick, the Glancall people also do an American style at a much more realistic price than the £350 cast 'through-the-wall' type or even the cast free standing type at nearly £400: http://www.glencall.co.uk/1gi/pill2.html

Ooh words that are guaranteed to make me do an involuntary shiver! The cast iron ones may be a bit pricey though!
