letter plates

I'm trying to find a black iron letter box/plate (whatever the proper term is) for the outside of our door - but we need one with a flap on the outside. Being very close to the road, when it rains, passing traffic sploshes the rain up our house and it comes in through the letter box! So we thought perhaps one with a flap would prevent this. The only ones I've seen on the interweb are modern shiny black ones. Any ideas? Ta.

Can be a little pricey...but try Clayton Munroe. They do some standard flat black fixtures and fittings and will also manufacture bespoke pieces to order

But a new one sand it down with 200 grade emery paper aand paint with your finest black gloss paint or spray it from a rattle can

Thanks for suggestions. I think a repro or original one in the style of the one on ebay looks the best route and I could paint it black if necessary. The front door is Victorian (although house is much older) so it's broadly in keeping.

Try the following site they have a whole selection of malleable cast iron letter plates from Kirkpatrick Limited. I can recommend the site as we are converting a barn in Devon and have purchased all our ironmongery and lighting from them. You need to look under the black antique section and then go to letter plates.

seconded - you want a supplier of Kirkpatrick - all our door furniture is made by them - it's lovely quality stuff - just posted pics recently on thread called "nearly there now - before and after pics"
