I don't have a letter box in my front door, which I think dates from the early 19th century with a rather nice fanlight above it (although whether the current door is that old is debatable). Unfortunately, the volume and nature of post that I get means that the present external letter box really doesn't work, particularly when we are away for a while. I would like to put a letter plate in the front door, then all the mail can safely accumulate inside the house. The only other external door furniture are a big black iron knocker and a large cracked white ceramic(?) knob. I know letter plates didn't really come into use until the late 19th C and even then they were small, but I do need something that takes what the postman brings! Does anyone have any suggestions - e.g suppliers of good quality iron reproduction plates?

Not exactly 'reproduction' as Kirkpatricks of Walsall have been making stuff out of malleable black iron since the dawn of the industrial revolution. Buy it from
Architectural Ironmongery of Ross-on-Wye. Very helpful, knowledgeable and efficient service, just phone them up, have a chat, and the pop it in the post.
