We've just moved into the new house, a little more work than I first envisaged but there you go (better start renovating some of the sash windows before they fall out!) but on clambering in the loft over a single storey extension I find two soaked rafters

I think there's a crack in the render bell drip which could be the culprit, just need it to stop raining...

Oh well, at least the rest of the house isn't as cold and draughty as expected! :lol:

I reckon nine out of every ten jobs here were more difficult than expected (either in time or £££, or both). I hope you're not expecting that all your walls are true vertical with perfectly square corners, that all your floors are level and that there are no centuries-old bodges.

Indeed! I've just whipped out one of the sash windows, I can't quite believe it but the previous owner appears to have used caulking and/or filler inbetween the beading and frame. Very strange if you ask me. They also appear to have suffered a little bit of rot so now it's trying to work out whether they're salvageable or not.

Having lived in various older properties I'm well versed in making things fit wonky walls, be that shaving bits of wood off until something fits or various ways of filling in the inevitable gaps. Sometimes I think it would be nice to buy a new build but I've not found one I like the look of.
