Progress! It rained cats, dogs and stair rods last night and the wind blew. And lo, the rain did NOT come pouring in above the dining room window where the timber and lime render receive the full force of the weather. It seems the treatment carried out last summer has worked. The amount of lead fixed into the frame (and lime-rendered over) should have worked, and it does indeed seem to have done.
The rain did come in a bit below the window, on one side only, but close examination revealed the cause. The new sole plate (4 years old now) has shrunk and cracked, leaving a gap for the water. Come the spring, I'll fill the gaps and cracks with lime putty, but for now I've fixed a board over it to keep the water out.
