Lead and Pamment Thefts

I thought this alert from the Eds & Ips Diocesan E-mail might be a timely warning, not only for Churchwardens but for others with lead and pamments in visible places:

Lead theft from churches continues to be an issue hitting many places of worship across the diocese. However, in a new twist, Brightwell church had its porch floor stolen last week. The floor made up of stone pamments was partially stolen one night with the thieves returning the following night to take the remainder. Please be vigilant and sign up for the free Police messaging service, Church Watch Suffolk, which warns subscribers of crimes affecting churches within Suffolk.

Just dreadful! Gorgeous mellow smooth flagstones are regularly lifted and stolen from up here outside old buildings and old pavements, I could weep.

Dreadful indeed, but it's not just historic materials. The scrap price for most metals has risen a lot in recent years, leading to an increase in thefts of almost anything metal including electrical wiring and copper earthing busbars from sub-stations. Not wanting to celebrate the death of anyone, but exactly how stupid do you have to be to try to steal copper cable from a power station? Even a disused one. Darwin's Law in action I think.
