I am taking the plunge of laying a limecrete floor in my kitchen. I've researched the topic on this forum (and elsewhere) and need some advice please, hopefully from someone who has actually done this.
The design I have been given uses a base of coated LECA, 200mm thick (with a membrane above and below) with a 100mm slab of NHL5 and uncoated LECA next, and a 75mm screed of NHL5 and sharp sand on top of that. We then intend to lay black limestone flags on a mortar bed which will add a further 50mm to this, making a total thickness of 425mm. I intend to excavate on a 45 deg slant away from the wall which has foundations extending about 9 or 10 inches below the floor level.
My questions:
1. This thickness (= 17 inches) seems to me to be quite a lot! Is there any scope for reducing this?
2. When I dig down on the 45 deg slant, how far down below the floor level should the 45 degrees start?
3. When laying the LECA and slab, does the LECA move as the slab is laid? i.e. does one lay the entire LECA first and then the slab, or can you work gradually along the room laying LECA a couple of yards ahead of the slab mix?
4. When mixing the NHL5, are there any techniques/tips I should know?
5. As it is a listed building (and I do have LBC), am I right to say that Building Control cannot insist on any specific depth or design of floor?
I'd appreciate any advice on the above questions and anything else that would help!
