I was watching a programme on tv the other night i think it was neighbours from hell or a title like that.

One of the stories was about a couple who had a big house but the ground was covered by an old law and they had to pay for the upkeep of the nearby church, They were Lay rectors and were being asked for money for repairs costing thousands of pounds.


Something worth considering if youre buying that nice farmhouse or cottage in the country, you could have a vicar demanding your cheque book :shock:

This matter is known as 'chancel rights' and although historically quite old has recently been in the news following some high profile cases. Google 'chancel rights' for loads more information.

You can have this risk included in searches and/or also buy insurance against it.

Oh, and this is not necessarily confined to old properties as the rights arise from the origin of the land ownership, so a brand new build could be equally affected.

Ken and his evil sheriffs have granted themselves the right to extort as much as they wish, without limit, increasing year by year....

This extortion is to be added to by what is known as 'lottericus ripofficus', whereby the amount of money currently going to help aid historic buildings is to be creamed off to fund the Olympics, on the grounds that it's heritage too.

Is that the same Kenneth de llivingstone who has decided to charge an extra toll on carts with more than one horse, that use bridleways across the lands that he has seized?
