We have had two quotes for the work to be carried out on our late 17th century cottage, both from builders that regularly work with older properties. We are removing the cement render, mending whatever needs mending underneath (!!!!!) and re- rendering with lime. One of the builders quotes for stainless steel lathes and 2 coats of lime render, the other, sawn larch lathes and 3 coats of render. The listed building officer seems to think either are fine. Does anyone know why they would vary in this way? One also quotes for a 'breathable' masonary paint instead of Limewash which ( I haven't asked the builder yet) the listed bulding officer says might be something called 'Keim', which he says isn't as good as limewash, but easier to use and the only other finish that they approve of.
I will, of course, ask the builders these questions as well but anyone's experience/knowledge would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
Katy
