lathe and plaster party walls

Am interested to hear from anyone with experience of party walls with adjoining property constructed of lathe and plaster, i.e. any associated problems

Well, lathes in walls can be very heavy. Laths however are the more normal form of construction.

When nextdoor decides to put a fancy oak staircase against the party wall that is lath and plaster he needs to be very carefull when banging large nails into 3/4 inch oak stringers as the whole thing may cause serious cracking!!!!!!

When he opened up the wall he found some nice original round logs still with the bark on, he plaster boarded his side and I did my side in nice split chesnut laths - mine looks the B^&&*&Ks and his looks like C$%^ !!!!

I stuffed a bit of rockwool in the void and that helps with the sound as well

Viki hi, I have exactly the same problem as you. Well maybe calling it a problem is too harsh on the neighbours, but the sound that comes from their house and I am sure ours, aswell, is quite loud..
In the new year I am going to strip away the plasterboard in the lounge and fill with acoustic insulation. There are many companies on the net that you can buy this from.
Once this has been done I will replace old plaster B with chesnut lath and lime mortar/plaster. Hopefully we will be able to watch the TV without the sound turned down low, good luck with yours, Paul D.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find the idea of a lath/plaster party wall quite scary? I've lived in a Victorian semi in a NW city, with a single-brick party wall, and found I could hear every word being said next door. (Mind you, the ceiling and floor joists overlapped as well, which exacerbated the problem.)

I don't think lath and plaster would be enough for me. I'd want to soundproof it.

Surely there are security considerations as well?

If I can't have a detached house, give me 15-20 inches of stone between me and the neighbours. :wink:
