Last room done - time to start again

Well it's only taken 3 and a half years, but we've finally decorated every room in the house at least once



Now we can carry on doing the outside

That's very impressive - well done you! In two months we'll have been here three years and we've only done the hall, music room, main bedroom and porch - leaving two more bedrooms, dining room, front parlour, bathroom, small bathroom, breakfast room, kitchen, passageway, wine cellar, scullery and upper scullery (which we hope to extend into a north wing) I'm estimating finishing in 2023. :x

Don't even ask Flyfisher how many he has left!! :wink:

You must be thrilled though. And I think it's sensible to do the inside before the outside, if you mean chiefly cosmetic change.

What works are you planning?

Aw thanks - I don't feel I've done much but the learning curve has been tremendous and very exciting. And that's thanks to this forum.

I was cheered to visit Brodsworth Hall on Saturday, they decorated once and never again. I think that's an inspirational approach to be emulated, those wall coverings and paint effects have now achieved a lovely state of mellowness and genteel erosion.

26 years and still not finished.
I've just succeeded in buying a roll of the original classic Laura Ashley wallpaper on eBay, so I can redo the bit where the damp got in instead of having to redecorate two staircases, hall and landings.
It was like getting to the end of the Forth bridge and finding the paint had been discontinued.

Thanks for the kind comments guys. It's so nice to get some feedback when you finish something.

Joceandchris it sounds like you have a lot more rooms then us - to have a scullery would be great (washing machine is in the bathroom and tumble drier is outside in a lean-to). What is the upper scullery for ??

The panelling is new and the handiwork of an excellent carpenter - I did consider doing that bit myself but working with wood is not a strong point of mine. The right-hand window is original and the left hand one was a door, then a window, then a cupboard and is now a wooden (but double-glazed) window again.

There is still plenty to do - we did a lot of the outside last year but we're still only about 1/3rd done. The good weather arrived earlier than we anticipated but that's where we'll be from now till November I expect.

The upper scullery is a curious room - built in the second half of the 19th C on top of the sunken scullery, it replaces an earlier porch structure along these lines: http://www.garden-requisites.co.uk/front_porches.html

I'm going to stick my neck out and say it was built for either dogs or cats, as it's inacessible to humans with the steps down to the scullery preventing entrance unless you're very agile. A family of feral cats were resident when we moved in. I don't know what we'll do with this room, but at least it now has a watertight roof.

Your carpenter did a very nice job on the panelling.

6 years in and just about finished hte kitchen and bedroom, just those odds and ends that you keep seeing adn go to do.................... but a cup of tea and a kit kat beckon as you plan your next move............. mind you I've done a good job of decimating the bathroom!!!!

For the high-class washing up, I presume, given that the word "scullery" is from an old Scandinavian word skola - to wash.
