We're into the final stages of the repair works and extension - it looks as if the builders will be gone by the end of next week, if all goes according to plan. That will be a blessed relief!
They're taking care of almost everything, but there is one item that we've come up with that isn't on their list and which I'd rather sort out myself.
The oak cornerposts (Tudor vintage) had some large shakes (vertical cracks) which the previous bodger filled with cement before painting the lot with a thick dose of black. In all the work that's gone on, that cement has worked loose and can be picked out (which we are doing).
My first inclination was to leave the shakes in their natural state, but we've had some rain seeping through - they are on the windward side of the house. Options seem to be:
1. Fill with wood glue and oak sawdust, then paint to match existing.
2. Fill with lime render, then paint. (Pure lime putty, or the 3:1 chalk/putty mix being used to render?)
3. Leave alone and put up with rain coming in a few times a year (not favoured).
4. Replace with fresh cement render
5. Something else that we've not thought of.
Are there any suggestions from the gathered expert community?
