Sir John Smith, founder of the Landmark Trust and all-round conservation good egg, has died.

A great loss. I had vaguely heard his name linked to the canal at Charlecote Park in Warwickshire (I grew up nearby), but I didn't realise he was the "father" of the Landmark Trust - an organisation for which I have enormous enthusiasm.

We owe him a great debt.
