Knotched Barge Board & Verge

I have a Grade 2 Listed cottage where the barge board is knotched to follow the profile of the tiles, rather than having an undercloak and mortar between that and the tiles. Whilst I don't mind the sparrows that have taken residence in my roof, I am trying to figure out whether I need to be worried about the wind/rain that it's letting in, or whether there's a 12" overhang around the edge of the rook overcomes this. I have thought about fitting stop beading and mortaring in the gap, but not sure that would be 'in keeping'. Any clues as to what would have originally been done to keep out the elements?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Are these pantiles?

Never seen a notched barge board before. If the tiles overhang the board, I would have thought that the downslope of the tiles would run the water off so it's unlikely to get underneath. However, the notches for the nib are a weakness. Have to say that although the visuals are good with the avoidance of a clumpy cement/lime verge, in terms of weathering this seems to me a dubious idea.

Have seen pantile verges with a wooden capping, and with a lead capping.

What happens on the other angle of the verge where the tiles are on the upslope?

We have a pantiled roof and have various edge details, as Ivor described - capping boards, mortared edges and leaded where they abut a raised gable. Like Ivor, I've never seen the arrangement shown in the above photo.

Personally, I wouldn't automatically worry about 'weather' getting in the barge board gaps, mainly because our old pantiles are so variable that, in places, we have bigger gaps between the sides of the tiles themselves! What really matters, I'd say, is what's underneath the pantiles. In our case, we now have an effective membrane where previously we had nothing or crumbling reed and mortar, so any rain driven under the pantiles can no longer enter the roof space.

We have triple roman tiles. The other side looks similar, though slightly tidier where the corner isn't missing on the other of the tile.
