Knockers

Well just one knocker really. I have just bought this cast iron letter plate/ knocker locally for my front door. I haven't a clue what would have been there originally, but there is no evidence of a knocker having been on the door so I imagine that whatever was original was some combined affair like the one I have bought. Does anyone know what finish the cast iron door furniture would have had??? I have the reprint of a Young and Marten catalogue, and most of the cast iron door furniture is said to be bronzed, with amazing expressions such as kahala, bronzed, or adamantine, bronzed. Or perhaps adamantine, and kahala are finishes in their own right, and the option was either adamantine or bronzed for example. Does anyone know if these are actual bronzing (electroplating) or some paint or enamel please?

Ah, now I'm getting the picture, thanks Johnboy that is useful, so kahala is a dull bronze lacquer. Maybe Adamantine is a shiny bronze lacquer as adamantine means lustre or something like that!! I feel like a historical researcher!!!

Adamantine is a term usually applied to minerals to describe their lustre, basically all the good sparkly stuff, diamond and the corundum family ( ruby and sapphire etc ). So maybe they were describing the difference between a shiny finish and something more matt.

It's tempting to look back at 1960s stuff like Adam Adamant Lives!, Department S, Crossroads, etc. as absolute rubbish.

But then I look at much of the execrable fare dished up today, and a fair bit of the 1960s stuff looks bloody marvellous by comparison*. After all, we also had The Prisoner, Maigret, Dad's Army, At Last The 1948 Show, Callan, The Likely Lads... and so on.
