kitchen update, pictures included !!!

I took a couple of pictures yesterday, as I found some old ones and wanted a comparison.... but also to show jo that although she hasn't had a kitchen for 4 years, we are making progress.........

Spot the built in dishwasher, that on Tuesday was finally built in.

Solid oak doors? Ledged and braced at the back? Interesting to see how they stand up to the changes in temperature and moisture in a kitchen. I guess they will be fine.

yes, solid oak, ledged but not braced. The woods been in the kitchen, which has been semi used, ofr the best part of 2 years, so has had time to get used to those conditions, hopefully shouldn't be too much of a shock in 12 months when it's all finished and we move in for real!!

The same solid oak doors to the rooms which have been in about 2 years, have coped fine, apart from one which had it's frame butting up to the fresh lime plaster and that must have sucked out a fair bit of moisture as it wouldn't close for 6 weeks!!

I havnt done any cabinet making for a while, having been diverted into curtain making and other activities, but your pics are giving me twitchy fingers! How did you attach the boards (T&G I assume) to the ledges? Any chace of a pic of the backs of the doors?

It's still work in progress, but I'll take some pictures.
We cheated with the doors, good old wood glue and screws for the ledges.
The wood is straight panelling, whatsited to make the grooves and then glued together. My father in law is making them and is happier that way.
We'll put some nails in so they match the main room doors later.

That's not what I would call cheating - sounds like sound construction. Non-ferrous scews needed here I wonder, to minimise risk of staining of the oak?

I am not sure about this, as I have only ever made one ledged and braced door myself, but I think I would not have glued the panels together. Solid wood will always want to move as the moisture level in the air changes (high in summer, low in winter for example). Not gluing the tongues into the grooves allows a little more scope for movement, but then you might increase the need for a diagonal brace to stop the door drooping over time. Difficult call.

Half the delay has been the amount of skiing we've done

A little more work........

We need to finish drawers, put nails in door fronts, make oak worktop, build a smaller range of units down another side, build a settle, build a dresser, finish electrics, then sort the odd loose tile on the floor, clean and I think that may be it!!!

I'm really looking forward to finishing something that actually makes a difference to the living environment of our house. Somehow all the roof works and window repairs don't seem to count - although they do make the place drier!

I'm painting the bedroom upstairs today, should be finished in about a week, so then I'll post some before and after pictures of that room, as it'll be just about done.

Yep, then it's the main bathroom, which has a hole in ceiling from leaking pipes and Jo's office next, should be done in around 3 years I think as much smaller projects!!!!

A week???

That sounds like a Penners painting project.

Two days to try out tester pots, argue with Herself about the suitability of the tested colours and go back to the shop for more tester pots.

A day to assess* the job.

A day to prepare - find the paintbrush, attempt to soften the hardened bristles in thinners, fail, go back to the shop for a new paintbrush. Plus a bit more assessment.

A day to faff about on PPUK, while continuing the assessment process.

A day to paint the walls.

A day to do the woodwork.



*Assessment is, of course, a vital part of the overall job, involving a considerable amount of sitting on the small stepladder, drinking endless cups of coffee and losing track of how many Kit-Kats you've eaten. Without this mental preparation, you're unlikely to be in the right frame of mind for a high quality painting job.

But I'm using casein distemper, old fashioned piant needing old fashioned timescales.

Yep, one day to paint the whole ceiling, it takes nearly two hours to do a quarter, by then I'm fed up of reaching, bending twisting, so it's time to knock off and cut some wood, or do some work work.

3 coats.
that's 4 quarters at 4 days, x 3 coats at 12 days, blimey it's gonna be a fortnight, cos we don't work weekends........


Found out some more about the house today. The farmer's wife asked to bring her brothers round today, and with them came the farmers 3 children. The one told us about the two rooms which were kncoked down in 1910, the other were to look for the priestholes and the third that there is a void under the kitchen floor, just where I'd piled a load of logs in front of the rayburn to take off any damp.........

Yes, the decorating takes ages and ages doesn't it? Even with modern paints you'd need a day for one coat of whatever. So 3 days for the ceiling, 3 days for the woodwork, 3 days for the painted sections of walls, 3 days for lining paper, 3 days for top paper - and that's not even counting Penners' accurate assessment of the days you need for choosing and mucking about on PPUK! All worth it in the end though.

Graham, it looks like our kitchen and porch/utility/whatever will be similar to yours...

Can I ask you how you've done the frames and doors in front of appliances? I was thinking of just putting a frame at the sides but having the doors going right down to the floor, so that the appliances can be pulled out if necessary.

Also, are / have you lined or painted the insides of your cupboards. I wasn't going to but I'm open to ideas if there are disadvantages to this.
