Kitchen tap with kettle hot water

Anyone used, bought, done away with, like, dislike the sort of kitchen tap that produces kettle hot 98' water ready for cups of tea etc and also nice cold filtered water.

Jo saw one on a grand designs and I'm wondering if they are any good, costly to run, gimicky or a darn good idea

At £450 it's not cheap, buit a decent mixer tap is between £100 and £200, so it's not amzingly expensive.

Looks a good way of scalding visitors to me who don't know how to work the taps.

As Schoolmarm says, I think I'd want to satisfy myself that it isn't constantly keep water hot, in readiness for that cup of tea moment.

However, if it's heating the water instantly, rather like an electric shower, then there could possibly be argument in its favour; namely that it isn't heating any more water than you precisely need. A kettle, of course, invariably heats more than necessary.

The ones I've used never get the water quite hot enough for a decent cuppa

With a well insulated tank they should not be to expensive to run, and of course the first water run will lose temperature to the surrounding brass/copperware so it could well be not hot enough for a cuppa.

We have a different solution, we just keep a kettle on the back off the woodburning cooker and when we want a cuppa whack it on the hot plate and its boiling in less than a minute and has not cost a thing as we burn mainly scrap wood.

I see they do chafing gel, too. Frankly I don't see the point of that. I prefer gel to prevent chafing.

We've got a wall mounted hot water dispenser at work - similar to what Jon has shown, but permanently plumbed in. It's not pretty and you wouldn't want one in your kitchen, but the point I'd make is that like Tim says above, the water is just not quite hot enough for a decent cup of tea - it keeps the water just below boiling and I don't think that's enough.

We have one at work that is brilliant, always piping hot water fine for coffee and just as good for tea. Am a black Earl Grey drinker so fairly fussy, I am told. It doesn't look very impressive and would hate it in a PPUK style kitchen but is quick for when you are gasping for a cuppa and the bell is just about to go.....

There was a very splendid boiling-water-dispenser thingy advertised in yesterday's Sunday Times. It looked very stylish and claimed to have all sorts of safety features so that children wouldn't boil themselves.
Unfortunately I can't remember its name (it had a website, and I think it had a q in it somewhere), and the newspaper was at the golf club, but perhaps someone here has a copy lying around and could provide more information.

They were installed in several office refurbishments I've been involved in. I didn't like them, too fiddly and expensive, but I've never actually used one.

Their advantages are in commercial applications, where there will be a mass of people wanting a hot drink at the same time and they cannot be trusted to operate a kettle without soaking, scalding or electrocuting themselves (and/or their colleagues) and then demanding compensation for their stupidity and clumsiness via ambulance chasing lawyers.

The kettle on a woodburning stove sounds good; I will ensure that several are installed in every office refurbishment I get involved in in the future.

I agree with those who have said teh water is not quite hot enough. In response to the safety issue, the one we have at work has a safety button you have to hold down in order to be able to activate the tap. It is more likely that visitors will not be able to get any water out at all than to scald themselves.
