I have always been curious as to what the kitchen range and surround looked like in my house (a 1903 terrace). When I moved in there was a Parkray stove and back boiler in the space which I removed, to be replaced with a cooker. Luckily the original brickwork was all intact except for some large holes punched in the side for the back boiler pipes. I made a wooden surround which was a total guess. I aimed for simple but attractive as I imagined that the kitchen would not have been very ornamented. I was looking on rightmove the other day and came across a house that is similar to mine (perhaps a little smaller, with this size of house an extra foot or 2 makes a huge difference!!!) just a few miles away which has the original range, and I would assume the original surround. Nice to know that I wasn't far off with my guess but to be honest I think I probably prefer mine!!!!
