Kitchen floor

Well folks, it's taken 15 months to tackle the kitchen floor. We've now removed a layer ofcheap nasty black slate, what we thought was travertine underneath turned out to be wall tiles :shock: :shock: then we found the rest of the pink and grey marley tiles and now we have got:View attachment 2

Underneath the concrete is a DPC but we've no idea what is under the other tiles, and the air is fresher. I suppose we now have to self level and then I will [put rhino flooring down I think, I'd really love Marmoleum, but they quoted me over £1k for that ---

That's certainly what I'd do, Joss. The alternatives are all going to cost a terrifying amount.


By the way, I've often wondered: is Marmoleum like linoleum, but with added Marmite?

A Marmoleum is a mausoleum for lovers of marmite. I personally fully support anyone's ambition to have their afterlife in a heaven of yeast-extraction.

Has anyone else tried Marmite XO yet? I spotted it in the supermarket at the weekend - Marmite Extra Old, matured four times longer that normal marmite for a stronger taste. It's divine - definitely one for devoted marmite lovers only.....

Well, judging by the taste of the damned stuff, it's going to be bloody crowded in there.

Marmoleum contains the following: Linseed oil from specially grown flax in Canada,wood flour from European Trees, rosin tapped from from Portugese pine trees, jute from Bangladesh and India,finely ground limestone and MARMITE in other words natural raw materials and totally biodegradeable-- rather large carbon foorprint though.

And it's very hard-wearing. We have it in our downstairs loo (which, because the other loos are on the top floor, gets more than its fair share of use) and twelve years on it's still as good as new.

If those are real old tiles they may look good when cleaned up. Then it may be possible to find enough reclaimed tiles of the same colour to break up the strip of concrete and complete the tiled floor. That's what we did with a similar situation, though our tiles were black and red chequerboard quarries, and in good condition (they had only been covered with nasty carpet when we moved in, and discovering them was a wonderful surprise). It's now very hard to see where the old section of floor stops and the strip of reclaimed quarries over concrete begins. Yes, there's dpc and new concrete under the new strip - not a lot of point as the rest of the floor is just laid on earth, but it was done before I started reading PPUK.
However, you have already got nice wooden kitchen units in place, and may not want the mess.

There are 2 more layers underneath that DPC, so I ain't goin no further.!! That's why our dining room mantelpiece looks so odd. Will try to locate the piccy of that. Oh and by the way, we removed the old shower fittings today, very carefully removing no more than 2 tiles because the budget wont stretch to ripping the whole lot out, and found a DOOR behind the tiles :shock: :shock: :shock: Can't get at that to photo I.m afraid, but this house has clearly had 2 add ons, not one as we first thought.

AND---- Classy Cookers have come up trumps, I've just accepted an offer for my 6/4 so it's Esse here I come..... but I still wish I could have had an aga

And if you open that door, behind it you'll find a bottle labelled, "DRINK ME". Its contents will taste like the mixed flavour of cherry-tart, custard, pineapple, roast turkey, toffee, and hot buttered toast.
