Kitchen Floor boards

Hello helpful ones

We have got to that point on our project where there is a possibility that we will be getting the kitchen in soon.

The floorboards that are down at the moment have been well fitted onto joists that are in quite good condition ( :shock: - for our place that is a shock)on top of bare earth. I want to keep the boards as the floor and bring them back to life by cleaning and treating them with something to nourish the wood as it is quite dry and possibly a bit brittle - whaddaya think would be best for it - Tung oil (if so how many coats will it need to stay nice long term) - or something else ?

We think the boards are pine BTW.

What will give us a good hardwearing finish, be easy to clean and be tough enough (waterproof?) for Kitchen floor and the usual spillages?

Good to hear of more progress, Shelli.

You'll need to start on your floorboards with a good cleanup. Hot water and sugarsoap will lift a suprising amount of muck, especially if you go at it with a scrubbing brush too. Rinse well and repeat. When it all dried off you can tackle any paint / oily deposits with an appropriate solvent or stripper.

Depending in the condition of the boards you may decide to sand them to achieve a smoother finish. Avoid using one of those hired drum sanders - they are very brutal. I'd try a random orbit disc sander, with a relatively fine abrasive like 180G or 240G. The aim being to achieve smoothness without leveling off irregularities or completely sanding off the patina of age. Ideally you'd avoid sanding altogether.

Once you're ready for a finish I'd recommend Osmo PolyX wax-oil. It's worked a treat on my kitchen floor, although that was new oak rather than old pine. It's very durable, cleans up well with a damp mop, and most vitally is easy to recoat when necessary. Although it seems expensive the coverage is incredible, so it's actually very economical. The finish looks waxy rather than varnishy, which ticks my boxes. If you anticipate heavy wear I'd give a coat of Osmo Wood Protector first. Regulars will be getting bored with me banging on about Osmo products, but they work so well for me that I make no apology for being evangelical about them. I've had too many dissapointments when other manufacturers stuff has failed to live up to the claims on the tin.

Cheapest local supplier is PADS on White Lund, Morecambe, but lots of online suppliers do it too if you don't mind paying delivery.

I have managed to avoid sanders - frankly I dont think these boards will need it - there dont seem to be any rough or stained areas - although we will have to re-fit the boards as the nails are rusted through

Thanks for advice re. Osmo - We have trade accounts so will try Kendal Paint & Colour 1st - am sure have seen Osmo there - if not Morecambe here we come !!
