Kings Lynn,OK, I`ve been there before but today I arrived an hour too early for my sons wedding so had a "walk about" what a wonderful place, will have to return when I have more time.
So unusual to see a 'black & white' house as it was supposed to be, with the timbers all washed over.
And a colour-wash too. Very nice.
If modern housing looked as attractive - which could perfectly well be done if builders could be ar*ed - there would be far fewer objections to new build.
Yes that house has wonderful herringbone brickwork between the studs, lots of carpenters marks visible and baltic graffiti on some of the timbers which I suppose is to be expected as it was a port. Some of the joints are very intricate,I must buy a decent camera and have a return visit.
All the best people were born in King's Lynn as well of course ;-)
You forgot the apostrophe! Mind you, all the locals refer to it just as "Lynn". I seem to remember it became "King's Lynn" during the reign of Henry VIII. Not that people in Norfolk are slow to accept change you understand
We spent the last couple of days in Shrewsbury, I spotted quite a few intentionally wonky windows, some straight at the top but angled at the bottom, and a Georgian terrace where one, out of say 10 regular windows, was skewed and slightly lower. I should of took some photos.
If you're Shrewsbury way and you want wonky buildings, "The Lloyds" at Ironbridge is one of several areas in the gorge with major ongoing ground movement problems.
The cottage really is that much on the lean, it's not a deceptive picture! It's surprising it's survived really - a lot of other humble buildings in that area have been demolished over the years due to all the landslip problems.
I suspect it's falling under the road... backwards ;-) Just spent a week nosing around North cornwall and some of the cliffside villages - few pictures though as keeping tabs on a sociable 3 year old...
King's Lynn really makes an effort on Heritage Open weekend in September.
With the amount of buildings open on the Sunday it would have been a great day out - but my car thought otherwise :-(
