I went and done many projects like that one when I was in the Royal Engineers, I even done a Survey of The Royal Albert hall and Westminster Abbey.
Lots of little stuff is done like building footbridges etc for NT and digging big holes.
They do cover Lime plastering on the Course at RSME but Gervase is wrong as everything is now sand coloured!!!

It was seen as a bit of a jolly and a chance to go and taste the local delights!!!!!!! I even volunteered to build a kids assault course up in Glencoe - great week.
Normally arranged for summer time so you could dig out the Dads Army Shorts and get a good farmer tan.
