Yes, it's "Shed Week" again! Mrs F still occasionally refers to this as my "shed" - after all the work I put into building it...... :roll: :evil: :lol:

Anyway, that shed of the year winner has got it all wrong. Where's the boxes of "it might come in useful one day" items? What's the point in having a shed where other people stand a vague chance of finding things? As a man, what's the point in having a shed that is not fantastically untidy? It's the one place you can hide from the family :lol:

Too right. This is more like a version of a 'summer house' (shudder). A shed is a place for tinkering, storage of lots of tools and 'useful things' (when exactly these will be useful is not to be specified) and somewhere stare are half-built objects while pondering deeply and stroking the chin.

Quite right. Any shed on which the doors can be fully closed or on which the doors can be opened without causing a landslide of 'come-in-useful-oneday' things is clearly unfit for its purpose.

I have a theory that the decline of the British engineering industries can be directly correllated with the reduction in the number of sheds; proper sheds, mind.

Too right,if we had not filled our sheds with "stuff" from work maybe we would still have an engineering industry!! as the "swag" gets used up there is no need for as large a shed (have you seen the price of nuts and bolts at B and Q ?) phil.

Wow Feltwell, if I had a shed like that I wouldn't need a house! Nice brickwork. After doing a bit of brickwork for the first time last week, and not being too happy with what the builders did on my house I've been paying a lot more attention to brick bonds etc. I like the way all the perpendicular joints on your shed are so straight and vertical. Did you do the bricks yourself????

Shed fever is contagious (different from cabin fever).
After seeing my shed/garage/workshop/retreat/bolt hole, my son in-law jumped at the chase to a buy a big shed with the small bonus of a house at the other end of the garden. He's been really busy ever since trying to fill it up. Because I'm generous I keep offering my overspill so he can achieve the proper full look even quicker.

After doing a bit of brickwork for the first time last week, and not being too happy with what the builders did on my house I've been paying a lot more attention to brick bonds etc. I like the way all the perpendicular joints on your shed are so straight and vertical. Did you do the bricks yourself????

No - it's just too large, it would have taken me forever. 4 brickies worked on it. I wasn't the most popular person with them, as I insisted they made it look like English bond, which meant lots and lots of brick cutting - as it is actually a cavity wall. Stretcher bond would have been easier and quicker but just wouldn't have looked right.

For the 2 sides and rear of the garage with the lower quality brick this wasn't too bad, the bricks could be cut easily enough with the edge of a trowel as they went. The front face though, with the higher quality red facing bricks, I cut every "half" brick with a diamond disc in an angle grinder - so that the weathered side could be used to show on the fake "header" courses and would match the stretcher courses. Took blo@dy ages! Anal, me????

The garage was an extravagance but actually most of the cost was in the groundworks - and if I hadn't demolished the old garages that were there then one of them would have fallen down by now! I looked at timber garages but the building inspector insisted on the same groundworks and all told it wouldn't have been much cheaper. Costs were kept down by lots of deals being done and a big chunk of the labour being me.

Too late now obviously but did you consider a masonary bench saw e.g. http://www.hss.com/g/7316/Masonry-Saw-Bench-Electric-350mm.html
We used one to split floor bricks (as I was many, many short) not that I'd recommend it in that application but for cutting decent bricks in 2 I'd recommend it - I didn't pay anything like £150 a week for it either.
