Hi everyone,
My husband and I bought our first home a couple of months ago, it is a Victorian mid terrace house.
We have high levels of damp in the cellar and in an external wall in the living room and I am wondering if anyone can advise on the following:
Damp in cellar/rot
Looking at the photos, do you think this is rot in the joist, and if so, what can we do about it? When the joist is touched it just crumbles.
Since moving in we have opened up the coal chutes and built a vent using air bricks and a paving slab on top to allow ventilation (they were originally shut by putting a metal plate down outside and then ‘sealed’ with expanding foam).
We have also been running a dehumidifier down there at least twice a week.
Rising damp
The pavement outside of our front door has also been built too high, up to the middle of the blue bricks. Is it easy to take the pavement back down? As I know this is probably the cause of our rising damp…?
Really hoping someone can provide reassurance and say it wasn’t a mistake purchasing this house… thanks very much in advance for reading and (hopefully!) the advice.
