Why is it that whenever they discover early historic buildings e.g. from the Roman, Iron age periods etc they are always discovered several feet underground even in the remotest places where no additional building has taken place. Look at the TV’s Time team for example. Dose it mean that the planet is building layers on itself and getting bigger?

Yes. By various different methods. You only need to look at my car to see the amount of dirt that is falling out of the atmosphere. Sand can be blown many thousands of miles for example.michael said:

If they'd (you know, THEM!) plant some more trees on the fells (not conifers though) the topsoil wouldn't slide into the valleys and silt up the rivers
it seems however that "they" will be planting wind turbines from now on - which probably won't stop topsoil erosion OR oxygenate the country

Re topsoil erosion, if turbines extract power from the wind they must also slow wind speeds down in the area, so they should reduce or stop erosion.
Re oxygenation, they are net energy generators, and they generate with no CO2 production, unlike most other gen techs, so they should result in better O2 levels by displacing other gen techs.
How do their effects compare to trees? I dont know. I suspect they'd have greater effect re O2 but dont have any figures so dont really know.

I think your point about turbines displacing other CO2 producing forms of gen tech is well made.

Conversely, a recent article in New Scientist suggested that global warming will cause the earth to spin faster because it will get smaller.
Apparently, the melting of the polar ice caps will have a similar effect to a spinning ice-skater bringing their arms closer to their body, causing the rotation to increase in speed.
Don't panic though, the effect is measure in a few tens of milliseconds per day. Alledgedly.
