Chimney swept and tested before delivery of highly environmentally approved woodburner model.Good updraught,sweep + stack condition.Smoke test clear ground floor,upstairs and attic.Outside most smoke plumed well out of its pot BUT wisp was spotted out of 2nd pot on stack,'poss crack in mortar'.If crack is above attic line,is a liner REALLY needed? Sweep did 2 smoke tests .Thanks

I'm sure Building Control says yes you do need one.
Search all the chimney liner posts we've had and got running currently, they'll give lots of other info.

As skier-hughes says above, there are several recent threads on this topic. Have a read through them.
Hi,liner is not imperative for installation of woodburner. No trace of smoke in interior,just a wisp from 2nd pot.I'm inclined to think the problem is above roof line, in which case I'd try burner without liner but good carbon monoxide alarms fitted as a precaution.Flyfisher said:What does it state in the installation instructions for the stove?

A liner may not be 'absolutely necessary' for your stove to function, but from a technical point of view it would be a very much better installation if you used one. By my understanding it is also required for Building Regs compliance. A google search will take you to sits like stovesonline which have extensive information about liner selection etc.

A smoke test should be 'under pressure - ie block off the flue - top and bottom - in order to see where smoke can escape.
