Iron window boxes

Hi Everyone
I recently picked up a pair of Iron window boxes on ebay. They have cleaned up well and I am thinking about fixing them to the front my cottage at the weekend.

I guess it is most common to weather proof them by painting them with Black gloss paint, however I was wondering if there were any more traditional methods?

Have you removed all the paint down to bare metal?

I think I have gort most of it off.

Are you intending to line it with something before putting soil in? Or is it an open work one ? Sounds good anyhow!

They are open, so I think I will just buy some dark coloured plastic planters from the garden centre and place them within the box.

I have no doubt there are more eco-friendly solutions available nowadays although I haven't had cause to use them - but International Paints does a good metal primer and satin black which is very, very long lasting.

I painted our railings with it over a decade ago and it's still going strong, also the guttering and so far it's fine.
