Iron Guttering

Fortunately I was sitting down when the quote from the builders arrived!
If I try reduce the cost by painting my new guttering myself can anyone tell me if you do this before or after it's been put up?

It depends just how exposed the fitted guttering is to paint!
however the installer will not thank you if the paint is still tacky or wet.

It's a darned sight easier to paint it before - you can touch it up again after if required. It's hard to reach the back where it's against the wall once it's up!

Have you considered having it powder coated? It can be cheaper than you think and should last longer before requiring repainting. Obviously, PC would need to be done before installation

Not sure what youre planning on painting them with, but I have just read on Holkham's site that you can paint iron guttering with linseed paints.

Rather annoying as I have just used hammerite on mine - the first nasty substance ive used in the 2 years we've been restoring our cottage. shame.

I have replaced the plastic gutter on a bay window with 'new' 60 year old cast iron stuff from my grandmothers house. her decorator was going to throw it away! stripped the old paint off with an angle grinder and its as good as the day it was made.

worked out cheaper than plastic as only had to pay £20 for some brackets.

Thanks for that Stuart - hadn't thought of that even though I used linseed oil on a windowframe a few weeks ago, but I do remember reading it now you come to mention it.

Has anyone here ever used it for this?

Lucky you to have enough old guttering to do your job. Actually I was surprised how inexpensive the new leadwork is - I had look around online and couldn't find any for less than the builders had quoted. I guess it's very true that nowadays labour is the most expensive part of any job, and this is where most of the money is going (digging soakaways etc.).
Some of the guttering I'm replacing is asbestos and of course one has to pay to get rid of that! At least I'll save £500 by painting it myself.

Yes, have painted all my old and new iron guttering with Holkham linseed oil paints. Looks very nice and one tin did the entire cottage (36 metres of gutter and 4 down pipes)

I used bituminous paint on the inside of the gutter and the two paints don't mix - i.e. you can't paint one over the other, so be neat is my tip.

Is it broken? I aks because asbestos cement is pretty tough stuff, and its no risk outdoors.

No need to pay anything to get rid of it, just double bag it and take to the tip.

No It's not broken - but I need to add an extra downpipe to the run as it can't cope with the ammount of water that comes off the roof, so it seemed like a good time to replace it. Builders are charging £200 to get rid of - so will check if I can take it to the tip.

Builders will have to pay to dispose of it as it's then commercial waste, but as domestic waste, as NT says, just double bag, seal the bag and go down the local tip. Try to do it in one trip, as you have to give your details - address, car reg etc when you arrive.

In my area the local tip won't take it - but the Council has a special collection, just phone up.
