Been doing a spot of thatching on this re-creation of an iron age roundhouse today. Oak, hazel, reed and string. No ordinary Portland cement was used in this building.
Actually, Biff, on this subject, I'd be interested to know whether you've been to West Stow Anglo Saxon Village near Bury St Edmunds. I've been meaning to go and and see it, but I'm keen to know first whether it really is an attempt at a genuine reconstruction, or whether it's just a kind of Disneyesque "Saxonland".
PS: I haven't forgotten about the window information - haven't been back to Hadleigh yet.
Not too far from us David, have been on some lovely walks around the parkland there but have never actually been into the village, have included the link below just as a taster, a bit cold at the moment to be visiting though.
No, I've not been to Stow Anglo Saxon Village.
The 'iron age' roundhouse is at the Linconshire Rural Activities Centre near Louth. I gather the idea is that when it's finished it can be used as a venue for activities, basket making, yoghurt weaving or whatever. I was just helping with the thatching yesterday.
It's beautiful, Biff. But there's something about the shape of that roof that makes me hear a deep, wheezing voice say "The force is strong within you, young Skywalker".
