internal plastering/rendering

I live in Mid Sussex and have recently bought a 16th century cottage. I need to do a small amount of internal re-rendering/plastering but am having difficulty in finding a plasterer or builder who specialises in these properties. It is a small job now but as the previous owner painted the whole of 2 bedrooms with emulsion which is leading to (part only at this stage) of the internal surface blowing out, it could be a bigger job in the future.
Generally, how do you find a builder sympathetic to old buildings when you are new in an area?

A good place to start is to contact your local authority Conservation Officer, who may have contacts with builders who are in tune with period buildings.

This site has a 'Seeking Specialists' part, which you may find useful, and the SPAB also has lists of people if you contact trhem.

You may also wish to join SPAB and go along to local / regional group meetings and activities - word of mouth and the grapevine are useful ways to find people to work on period buildings!

I also recommend a SPAB Homeowner's Weekend - great for new owners of old buildings to learn a great deal about appropriate ways to traet them.
